Before the invention of VR dome, most people only knew the VR head-mounted device. Although they are still in existence, the new VR dome is now overtaking head-mounted VR devices. One thing about the head-mounted VR device is that it is meant to serve just one person. This fact confirms that the content seen through the device cannot be projected to another person unless they are both served by a common source. The need to create a unified experience among several individuals with similar interest was the reason behind the development of the VR dome.
VR dome is a version of the head-mounted VR device that allows a group of people view images and other contents of their choice. It is more like an open display that provides viewers with universal images. Apparently, the experience in a VR dome is far much enjoyable as compared to the head-mounted VR device. From all indications, VR dome comes as an advancement in technology. In essence, VR dome works ideally in creating a perfect projection of what the world and the universe entails.
A VR dome assumes the shape of a dome. Inside the dome, there is a projection of virtual images designed to paint a realistic situation. For instance, if a group of people is interested in viewing the universe, virtual screening of the same is done such that all individuals get a clear view when inside the dome. VR domes are not necessarily meant to project the virtual appearance of the universe. They can also be used in screening other content based on the preference of the group in question.
Categories of VR Content
Considering that VR dome is not such an established development yet, the kind of content that is provided using the same is somehow limited. Currently, there are three prime categories under which the VR Dome content lies. They are:
Visualization is the VR category that is meant invoke reality into concepts. In most cases, this technology can be applied in the business industry especially in projecting main messages and ideas with the intention of addressing employees. VR dome technology is gradually making its way into the corporate world, with some companies using the technology to coordinate their team. This technique has proven to be applicable to ensuring effective planning in corporations. It also works ideally in mitigating errors that may affect the performance of a given company.
The aim of this is to create a perfect picture of the viewer’s imagination. It aims at engaging, inspiring, and entertaining the viewer. For instance, most people only hold the imagination of what it is to be close to the moon and see the surrounding. VR dome can be used in projecting the exact imagination hence making you feel as if you are already taking a tour to the moon. 3D technology is highly applicable since it provides realistic image projection. The idea here is to create an experience that is almost a reality.
It becomes difficult at times to instill knowledge in a team especially if the content in question is above their understanding. However, this can be made better if VR dome technology is used to recreate real-life situations. It becomes easy to approach and expound hypothetical issues realistically. VR technology has been regarded as one of the most effective ways of educating and training individuals
Challenges Facing The VR Dome Technology
One of the prime challenges facing this technology is making things ‘real’. It is one thing for people to view projections using this technology and it is another for them to accept it as reality. The challenge of making people view VR dome as a realistic projection remains big. Aside from that, availability of VR dome technology is not yet widespread. While VR headsets are fairly available in the market, VR domes are not available as such. In the same vein, the VR dome technology has not yet been accepted in the mainstream, hence posing another challenge.
